Is America is turning to Socialism?

With the new Obama administration's left leaning policies, some citizens say that the U.S. is slowly turning to socialist ideals in a time of economic crisis. With the abandonment of the free-market principles (even by the Bush Administration) and the billions of dollars of bailouts to banks and the auto industry, some say the shift away from capitalism is becoming slowly evident. Some nations have even warned the U.S. not to move too far left such as Vladamir Putin who reminded them of the negative turns that the former Soviet Union took.

Not only are pro-capitalists (citizens) concerned over the amount of regulation by the government but they're also concerned over the amount of control by the government over private enterprise (with GM being the recent one in the news). Do you agree or disagree that the U.S. is moving away from capitalism and turning to socialism? If you agree, do you think it's a positive or negative turn? If you disagree then how do you account for all the government regulation that is contrary to capitalist principles.

I think to use the word "socialism" is irresponsible. I think that Obama inherited an economic downfall that many "experts" are trying to figure out what is the best way to deal with.

Do I think what Obama is doing the right thing? Who the fuk knows, I don't think anyone knows because economics are so erratic and illogical.

I do know that BOTH republicans and democrats understood something needed to be done because we are in an economic crisis and it could get much, much worse.

Only time will tell but I do like the way Obama is approaching things and governing from the center. I'm tired of extremist ideas being pushed on everyone. It's time we had someone in the White House with some rational thought and convictions.

Lol, changing some politics.. Seeing benefits in some left wings ideas and solutions doesn't mean they are about to become communist in a near future.. Socialism and communism isn't exactly the same thing.. Scandinavian politics is in a major way influenced by socialism and we (Denmark, Sweden Norway) have the world highest taxes but that doesn't make us communists

WE have ALL been lied to. We've sacrificed our ideals to a group which doesn't truly even fit most of our beliefs. I know because I believed in the new administration, I really did. But you know what, when Tim Geithner says he wants to regulate and limit how much pay a private worker gets is absurd. We are headed for liberal fascism and its slipping right under our eyes. Say goodbye to individualism and the incentive to achieve. And, oh yeah, Obama fully supports this guy Geithner....OH YEAH! Geithner didn't pay thousands of dollars of taxes, and neither did this new nominee for health care secretary... Such hypocrites, its not even funny, its a crime. We thought accountability was coming to Washington, that we'd be told the truth, yet it was all a bunch of LIES.

I never said they are becoming communists. That would be seriously pushing it because socialism and communism are two similar yet distinct political economic ideas. I cited Vladamir Putin's comments to the Obama Administration not to move too far left to socialist ideals. If a former Socialist State is telling another State not to move to the left, then I think they mean it. Based on the decisions and the regulation of the economy, it's really difficult to make a case that defends capitalist ideals within the recent economic decisions.

You are so oblivious to economic principles that it's becoming somewhat embarrassing to even argue with you. The least you can do is understand the economic structure and understand the current economic decisions. You will literally say anything to defend the Obama Administration and liberal policies even if you have no idea of their policies nor any idea how they work. I'm not arguing against every liberal policy. I'm arguing whether or not the policies are shifting away from capitalism. The least you can do is understand the economic structure and understand the current economic decisions. You should be commended for being enlightened. Again, we've all been lied to. The new administration (notice, not JUST Obama) and their new methods and agendas seem good on paper and may work in the short term, however these ideas go against ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY! Socialism has not, nor will never work, its just against human nature. And when an ex-KGB assasin who used to kill for Socialism tells you not be be socialist, I don't think he's really lying. We need capitalism because it is competition which advances our standards of living, the very foundation of America! Of course, there must be rules and regulations, this is not the Wild West, however if America wants to stay afloat we must keep our ideals. I can't imagine what you guys would say if FDR where in power today and had the same programs going on now as he did in the Great Depression.. you would probably call the man a communist and hang him.
