Default Is it a bad idea to try and train yourself in boxing?

My dad was 3 times amateur boxing national champ and when i was a kid he showed me how to punch with your hips and he prefered the cross guard so thats how i box but hes been in jail for the past 4 years and i have always trained twice a day 6 days a week for the last 2 1/2 years cardio and abdominal training in the early morning and weight lifting at night anyway im 16 1/2 and i got my first bag its slightly on the heavy side but not heavy heavy and my knuckles have been getting sore so i was thinking of starting to do knuckle push ups/press ups whatever you call them and is it a bad idea to try and train myself? my dad said he trained in boxing gyms but disagreed with some things the trainers would say so he pretty much trained himself just went to the gyms for sparring he sparred with jose torres and torres commented on him being a very good amateur and said he would do well as a pro but he didnt end up turning pro boxed for 20 years losing 2 fights 1 by disqualification and 1 by a close descision to the national champ at the time which he knocked out both times in the rematches anyway my point is if he can accomplish all this just by training himself it cant be that bad to train yourself? I just focus on keeping my chin down shoulders up that kind of thing so any advice would be much appreciated. thanks.

Yes. I think if you want to box you should train in the environment and atmosphere. You'll feel that you're more into it when you surround yourself with other fighters. There's more energy in a gym i think.

The reason its good to train in a gym is that you can get sparring, drills and somebody may point out something your doing wrong or strangely. Even if you dont take their advice its good to be aware of the things you do. And yeah, the atmosphere is really cool and helps keep you motivated and focused on what your there to do.

you cant train completely at home unless your just for exercise. If you want to compete you have to spar and get a cornerman. And if your thinking about amature you have to be certified through a gym. But i beleive you can become good on your own, if you know what your doing. You will be your trainer so you have to know as much as a trainer would. peace

Anything is possible. Don't make it logical. You need that coaching and experience that a coach would have. A lot of you training you do by yourself. But what you get from others is important. Not one coach can say they no it all so don't find one of them. you can train yourself for a while but you will need coaching to take it to the next level.

Like Miamijohn said it is possible to be successful... however I wouldn't recommend it at all, you will better off finding a qualified trainer or coach who knows what he is doing more and can teach you better. Hope it helped!
