The answer to the simple question in that headline is surprisingly hard to come by. So Slate and the Twitter feed @GunDeaths are collecting data for our crowdsourced interactive. This data is necessarily incomplete. But the more people who are paying attention, the better the data will be. You can help us draw a more complete picture of gun violence in America. If you're so concerned about drug and gang related deaths, why not start up your own crowdsourced interactive wherein you tabulate the annual deaths caused by them?

Drug and gang related shootings still involve bullets and guns, last time I checked. So while I cannot give you a legitimate answer to your intentionally dismissive question, I can say with complete confidence that 100% of those 4,172 deaths were caused by firearms.

Even the drug and gang related ones you're desperately trying to shift the focus towards.

For the sake of the argument, why dont you provide the statistics showing gun crimes and murder being in a massive decline since the 1990's? Caution tho, you will probably have to look somewhere besides CNN for this info...

And the point of my original comment was the illegal drug market creates a very big and dangerous black market for them. Other countries have shown, that legalizing drugs massively reduces these gun incidents within said drug market. The bulk of gun crimes/murder are intertwined with this market

I have no problem with posting such statistics....

The Justice Department released a study Tuesday that showed firearm-related homicides in the U.S. annually declined 39 percent from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011. Nonfatal firearm crimes declined 69 percent from 1.5 million to 467,300 in that time frame.

11,000 people. I repeat eleven thousand people. You probably look at that statistic and think "not bad", whereas I look at that statistic and think it's about 10,000 too many. I leave 1,000 deaths out because I realize that gun violence will never be truly eliminated in this country, but even that number (1,000) is 40 times higher than other industrialized western societies.

If there were one other single factor that accounted for 11,000 homicides per year, any sane individual would look at that statistic and wonder what could be done to cut down on the amount of intentional homicides. It's only in regards ot guns that we skirt the issue here.

I'm inclined to agree with the fact that legalization of drugs reduces violent crimes overall, however you're being extremely dismissive here. I've posted the cold hard fact that over 4,000 Americans have been murdered in cold blood with a firearm in the past 5 months and you're sitting there going "yeah, but uhm...drugs and stuff."

Ridiculous.

It's f*cking insane is what it is.

Yet there are some amongst us who'd like us all to believe that they were all the result of drug deals gone bad.

I love this project. I hope it continues to gain ground like it has been doing, it's the only way to wake people up to the reality of gun crime in this country, and it makes it virtually impossible for gun apologists to dismiss it's significance.
