Smoking Joe Frazier comments on Ali

Frazier was quoted as saying at the 96 Olympics that he wishes he could throw Ali into the fire when Ali was lighting the torch.

He also said that he thinks he won the first 2 of their fights hands down and if his corner didn't stop the third fight he would have won that one too.

I recently watched all three fights and while I think the first fight was clearly won by Joe i see the second fight being Ali's for sure. I don't recall the scores but I remember Ali hitting joe with everything but the kitchen sink. The third fight was more of the same Ali giving Joe the one two until his eyes were basically closed and he couldn't even see the punches coming. I have no doubt in my mind Joe was a great fighter and gave Ali a run for his money each time out but i don't think Joe won the 2nd or was ahead in the 3rd when it was stopped.

I also do not think Joe's comments were warranted after they supposedly reconciled their differences. I think Joe should no class with his remarks about the torch lighting back in 96. I was wondering what others thought on this subject?......Lefty

When did Ali and Frazier broker a truce, and on what terms was it brokered? To have animosity towards someone who denigrated you and called you an Uncle Tom in front of the whole world, is that not something to hold a grudge about? Does it make it worse if when that guy was on hard times you helped support him with handouts?

From my recollections, nothing was smoothed over until many years later, I'm talking late 20th century here, in which Ali finally called up Frazier and cooled things over. That's after the Olympics in '96, a few years after.

Telling Frazier's son "Tell your Pops we're cool" after all of that stuff is not a way to to reconcile.

I recall many public apologies and them setting aside their differences in 1974...Or supposedly..the best way you can show a fellow fighter love in my book is to fight him. the only way they make money is if they fight. Ali still fought Frazier a second time after he lost the belt to Foreman. the third time he gave Frazier another title shot. I think Ali was trying to hype the fight and get inside Fraziers head and did it alittle too much....What do you think aobut Joe stating he won all three fights...Lefty

Even as an Ali fan I thought he crossed the line with some of the remarks he said to Frazier considering all the things Frazier did for him when Ali was in his exile, Frazier didn't have a bad thing to say about Ali until Ali started up with his trash talking.

And I also think they didn't reconcile until a few years after the 1996 Olympics.

For the record, I had Frazier winning the first fight clearly, no way he won the second, Ali won that very clearly, third fight was close until round 11 when Ali started to take over.

I think the worst thing you could do is apologize and then go back and do the same thing. You say '74, but then in '75 he was back calling Frazier a gorilla and that he was the white man's champion, etc.

I think the reason Ali was fighting Frazier because those were the biggest money fights available. It also didn't hurt that he had been demolished by Foreman not long before so it could only help his chances to seek revenge on a wounded duck.

I agree that Ali was trying to hype the fight, but Frazier didn't look at it that way. He couldn't believe that his friend was saying things in public about him. Frazier was not a tactical genius who could see past jibes that way, he was a man from the South based on gentleman principles.

About Frazier winning all three, yeah OK.

There are some people who just despise each other, and there's nothing that will change it. I've only had a couple of people that I felt that way about in my life...one of them died years ago (I had nothing to do with it, though I would've quite happily fired the RPG that blew his ass into itsy, bitsy pieces all over the desert) and the other got pregnant and I married her. And I promise you, there's nothing that would've, could've, or will, ever make me feel differently about either person.

My point is that I seriously doubt Smokin' Joe would feel any differently about Ali no matter what the circumstances, and if Ali were standing there with his head on fire, Joe probably wouldn't waste a piss trying to put him out.

I edited my post to add what I thought about that.

Ali was just selling their fight, Both fighters became legend because of their fights together, Joe didnt get the selling point and he doesnt have to IMHO.

Why would Ali insult joe on purpose after joe helped him out when Ali was in exile? He just knew he had to sell their fight and the best way to do it was to trashtalk.

Ali though should have called joe and let him know he didnt mean anything by it (Name calling).....................Ray
