Default Thrashers Dan Snyder- Dany Heatley in car crash

ATLANTA -- Thrashers center Dan Snyder was critically injured in a car crash Monday night, and star right wing Dany Heatley broke his jaw in the accident.
The Thrashers said Tuesday that Snyder fractured his skull when Heatley's Ferrari crashed at about 10:30 p.m. Several sources reported that the crash occured in the tony Buckhead section of Atlanta.

Police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Ferrari hit a wall at about 80 mph, and that Snyder was ejected from the car, which was cut in half.

Snyder was in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital, and the team released a statement saying he would have surgery Tuesday morning for a depressed fracture in his skull.

Heatley was in stable condition with a broken left jaw, and WXIA-TV reported early Tuesday morning that he was conscious and talking

Heatley, who is 22 and was the NHL's 2001-02 rookie of the year, was driving the car.

Thrashers President Stan Kasten held a news conference about 3 a.m. at the hospital and said the team still was planning to hold a practice at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Kasten said he expected to inform the team at practice.

General manager Don Waddell and Snyder's parents were flying in from Toronto on Tuesday, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report. The paper also reported that Waddell said team doctors William Whaley and Scott Gillogly were attending to the players at the hospital.

Snyder, who scored 10 goals and added four assists in 36 games for Atlanta last season, had surgery on his ankle earlier this month before the start of training camp. He was expected to start the season on the injured list.

The 25-year-old player signed with the Thrashers as a free agent in 1999 after playing four seasons of junior hockey for Owen Sound in the Ontario Hockey League.

He spent most of his first two professional seasons in the minor leagues, helping Orlando win the International Hockey League title in 2000-01 and playing on the Chicago Wolves' American Hockey League championship team in 2001-02. He played 35 games for Chicago last season, scoring 11 goals and adding 12 assists.

The 22-year-old Heatley, the NHL rookie of the year in 2001-02, led Atlanta in scoring last season with a team-record 41 goals and 48 assists, and is the Thrashers' career scoring leader with 155 points. He scored four goals in the 2003 All-Star game and was selected the MVP. The former University of Wisconsin player was the second overall pick in the 2000 draft.

The Thrashers last played on Saturday night, with Heatley scoring an overtime goal in a 3-2 exhibition victory over Nashville in Richmond, Va.

Atlanta is scheduled to play Florida at home on Wednesday night and complete its preseason schedule Friday night at home against Nashville. The Thrashers' first regular-season game is next Thursday night against Columbus.

ATLANTA -- Dany Heatley is in police custody at an Atlanta hospital after a Monday night crash that seriously injured Thrashers teammate Dan Snyder.

Snyder remained unconscious and in critical condition at Grady Hospital, where he underwent two hours of surgery.

Heatley is in stable condition at the same hospital, where he is being treated for less serious injuries. He has been charged with a felony.

After Heatley is discharged from the hospital, he will be sent to the city jail for formal processing, police spokesman Sgt. John Quigley said.

Heatley is scheduled to be in traffic court Oct. 10 to face charges of serious injury by vehicle, a felony; and reckless driving, driving too fast for conditions and striking a fixed object, all misdemeanors according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Heatley is being held on a $50,000 bond on the four charges, Erik Friedly, spokesman for Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, told the paper.

Heatley was also charged with driving on the wrong side of the road, for which an additional $200 bond was levied. The paper reported that bond was set in a meeting Tuesday afternoon by Fulton County Magistrate Judge Richard Hicks in a meeting with Senior Assistant District Attorney Shondeana Crews and Heatley's attorney, Don Samuel.

"The district attorney is prosecuting the case because of the felony charge, which automatically makes it our jurisdiction," Friedly told the the Journal-Constitution.

Heatley took a blood-alcohol test, which is standard in serious accidents, but results will not be available for weeks, according to police.

Officers estimated the car was traveling about 80 mph
