Default Why are boxing boots high cut?

After a long layoff I am getting back into boxing. I was wondering why boxing boots are high cut. After 6 years of training/sparring using normal runners I cant remeber any ankle problems. So besides the appearance and the warm fuzzy felling you get when booting up for for fight that makes you feel like a real boxer
what are the advantages. I was thinking of buying some low cut martial art style bootsthat have the same sole and appearance except for being low cut.

I'm not sure but I think it may be extra support and protection for your ankle.

I would agree with those above. It is to support your ankle, same reason walking boots are like that. It would suck to lose a fight because you hurt your ankle in the fight wouldn't it?

And plus makes you feel like a pro

Thanks for the answers but as I said in my original post I trained and sparred for 6 or so years in normal low cut runners and never had any ankle problems sprains or strains, so for me I cannot see why the ankle support is necessary. Nearly everyone else I train and have have trained with use normal runners and only high cut boots for comp.

It depends on your form. A higher cut is good if you tend to have a fairly straight forward plodding style. If you are agile and move a lot laterally, then a lower cut will serve you better for mobility. Pros and cons to either.

A person of 16 could answer something a 35 years old could not..... it just goes to show you can't teach common sense.

msagrain I realise the high cut is for ankle support and of course this is common sense - no need to insult my intelligence (although people can learn from people of all ages) - but if you read what else I wrote, what I want to know is the ankle support necessary because all my training has been done in runners (without ankle problems), but, like most others when I competed it was high cut boots. Perhaps it also could be argued that if we compete in the boots we ought to train and spar in them as well: makes sense? I just wanted thoughts of other boxers and some further information or theory why high cut boots. Thanks for your answer thetruthis

It just annoys me when i see these type of questions. They just help in the ring, sometimes if you don't have good footwork, your ankles can twist.
