  • The bigger the legs the harder the punch?

A friend of mine was telling me that the thicker a fighters legs are the harder he can hit usually. He said a huge portion of your power comes from your base. I know all about the physics of a punch and turning at the hip but is that true? Do fighters with bigger legs or lower bodies generally hit harder?

True I just pictured Naseem in my head and he has enormous quads and calves.

I guess it is true then.

Tyson at his current weight has a big old ass - no ****.

But that does go to show his lower half is disproportionate to his upper body.

Yes the one guy you named cancels out the fact that it holds true with the nine other fighters named. Isn't there a Floyd thread you should be in dissing all those who don't agree with you? **** outta here *****.

Its not the be all end all in power punching but it does play a major role.

When you punch (WITHOUT using the torque) in your lower body your punches dont pack as much power.

thats why you dont see many fighters get dazed with punches when the opponent landing the punches doesnt have his feet set or is back pedaling.

You power doesnt come soley from your arms.

Its similar to pitching in baseball...

When pitchers throw the ball they step into the pitch with their front foot...

pitchers rely a great deal on their lower body.

If a pitcher were to NOT use his lower body he would be injured from the amount of pressure they are putting on their arm/upper body...using the lower body for the torque takes pressure off of your shoulder/arm and allows you to pitch at a higher velocity.

Same for boxing...you can puch using ONLY your upper body but for power you want to set your feet and step into your punch using your lower body for majority of the power.

its not the be all end all to power in your punches but it helps.

                    hope that helps.
