The 5 Fights That Sum Up Your Favourite Fighter

Which 5 fights involving your favourite (or any) fighter would you recommend to someone who had never seen them box before?

They don't neccessarily have to be their 5 best performances, but the ones which best sum up their career, and show just what makes them so good (or bad).

I'll start with an easy one, Joe Calzaghe:

    Calzaghe v Eubank - A War
    Calzaghe v Lacy - A Demolition
    Calzaghe v Kessler - A Lesson
    Calzaghe v Reid - A Close One
    Calzaghe v Mitchell - A Comeback

(I think I'll also break my own rules and give an honourable mention to Calzaghe v Ashira - One Handed!)

    Gatti vs Robinson I
    Gatti vs Ruelas
    Gatti vs Rodriguez
    Gatti vs Ward I
    Gatti vs Ward III

I was at the Robinson, Ruelas and Ward III fights.

It's sad now because I knew at least once a year I'd see Gatti in one of his legendary wars.

      Tyson v Berbick
      Tyson v Spinks
      Tyson v Holmes
      Tyson v Pinklon
      Tyson v Biggs
In his early 20s the guy was a beast. You could throw in Tucker in place of Holmes if ya want cuz Larry was old in 1988, and against Tucker Mike went 12 competitve rounds and beat a good fighter on points which he couldn't do aside from Ruddock in the 2nd fight (Bonecrusher don't count).

He's my all time. For one of my currents (don't got just one) I'd say Pac.
      Pac v JMM 2
      Pac v MAB 1
      Pac v Erik 2
      Pac v Erik 3
Pac v Ledwaba (hope that's spelled right)
Manny's got a strong arsenal: skill, power, speed, combos, stamina, chin. He's excitin to watch even if it's a one sided ass whoopin.

Whitaker vs. Ramirez II - Showed Whitaker's unbelievable defense and impossible style of fighting. Pernell showed that flash and the skill. He left no reason to doubt he was the better man after their first bout in which Whitaker was most certainly robbed of a win.

Whitaker vs. Haugen - Showed Whitaker's incredible skill, which was so great that he completely discouraged the tough Haugen from throwing. Haugen had thrown with some of the best lightweights of the time, but Whitaker completely took his will to fight. Maybe Pernell's best performance.

Whitaker vs. Chavez - Showed that Whitaker was special, even a level above the all-time great Julio Cesar Chavez. Also touched on the controversy that surrounded some of Whitaker's most high profile fights. Very few feel Chavez deserved a draw.

                Whitaker vs. McGirt I
                - Showed Whitaker's ability to engage his opponent, turning defense into offense and vice versa. Showed his untouched ability to defend himself while standing in front of his opponent. Also characterized his change in approach to fighting as a Welterweight. More talent in the ring that night than I have seen in a great time.

Whitaker vs. Hurtado - Showed Whitaker's heart and mean streak. In a fight where Whitaker was looking bad against a younger, more active opponent, he found a way to pull out the fight. The 10 or so unanswered left hands he landed while Hurtado was defenseless and slumped on the ropes showed his mean streak.

I was thinking of adding Whitaker/Trinidad, but since we can only do 5 I stopped. The Trinidad showed everything that was bad about Pernell Whitaker, but also showed a few great things too. It definitely showed the negative effects of drugs, something Pernell had been using well before that in the form of ******* and alcohol.

However we also got to see that Pernell was pretty damn tough and VERY proud. He got hit with more clean punches in that fight against a HUGE puncher than he was ever hit with in his lightweight days. He took his beating like a man though.

Here we go, predictable I know but its Ali:

Ali vs Liston 1 (7-1 underdog and 1st title win)
                    Ali vs Williams (Masterful display)
Ali vs Frazier 1 (Ali really showed his heart to complete the 15 rounds here)
Ali vs Foreman (3-1 underdog, only guy ever to stop Foreman)
Ali vs Frazier 3 ('The closest I ever came to death' Ali 1975)
