Cotto sets himself further away from "Money" by fightin Gomez

Lets look at it in the best case cenario: Floyd comesback in 09 for a showdown. What would Cotto resume add to Floyd? Cotto last 3 will say: 29 year old 0-2-1 in his last 3 fights Zab Judah, now fighting wednesday nights (pretty shot huh?) , 36 year old Shane Mosley (10 years Cotto's senior!) and... Gomez, a guy who lost to Manfredo by split decision in 2004.

Cotto does NOT want to fight the best, he wants to go straight to the money land (Mayweather) but don't they all want "Money" Mayweather? So if Mayweather comesback in 09 please don't come here saying he's ducking Cotto. In this moment any fighter with Mayweather's status would avoid Cotto. (not a compliment for Cotto)

Oh and to those who said Williams had a fight scheduled already and so did Citron, note also Williams was calling Cotto out WAY BEFORE THAT and Arum, that racist mother****ing manager said he wanted no piece of Williams.

Cotto's resume at Welter is just as good or better than Floyd's right now. He did better against their shared opponent in Judah, beating him by TKO, won by UD against SSM, stopped an and coming prospect in Quintana, and got a UD against Urkal. Floyd stopped a shot Sharmba Mitchell, won by UD over Zab, won by UD over Baldomir(who has shown how lucky he was to have a belt since), won by SD over DLH, and TKO'd Hatton(who, while great at 140, is shaky at 147).

Cotto didn't fight Williams because he was optimistic he'd get a fight with either PBF or DLH in the summer, neither of which appears to be panning out. Basically what he has available to him now is a rematch with SSM, or fight a "tune-up" against the likes of Clottey, Collazo, or Gomez to set up a Margarito fight later.

Critiquing his choice of tune-up opponent is fine, but keep in mind that tune-ups happen for everybody, and that Floyd fought Bruseles to tune-up for freaking Gatti. If Gomez turns out to be the opponent, he's way better than Bruseles, and it would be tuning up for a better opponent than Gatti in Margarito. And what Floyd gets for fighting Cotto is he beats the consensus number two Welter right now, and sheds some of his cherry picker label.

Lose lose situation for Cotto here, I hope he's smart enough not to take this fight plus Gomez is bigger and can make things interesting in there. As far as the fight goes, should be a good one.

It hasn't been announced, it's just strongly rumored.

My boy Cotto stays active, fights 3 times a year! And if you think his record is being padded, then you really don't know boxing! Gomez beat some good opposition, got himself some exposure beating Gatti, and the "Contender" finalist, and can make things interesting. Torres was an unknown (except Colombia) and rocked the day lights out of Cotto. I'd have a rising superstar active and fight ALL top contenders in between super bouts. Yeah, of course it takes risks of injury, but at the very least, gains more experience.

actually the guy who started this topic knows nothing about marketing or business. Alot of people watch THE CONTENDER, even people they don't like boxing. Alfonso Gomez is a known guy to them. When they see Miguel Cotto beat the hell out of Gomez, they will want to watch more fights of the guy who beat the hell out of Cotto
