I have done this exactly once; not even to spar, jut to check the gym out because it's closer to my new place. The coach was a dick and the guy he put me with was trying to K me TFO from the word go. The coach was screaming at him the whole time: "WE DO NOT LOSE FIGHTS!!!" ****ing Cobra Kai Dojo revisited. I had bruises the size of plums for weeks. Fortunately, the guy telegraphed severely so he didn't get much of me other than my arms and back.

I wouldn't do it again, I don't think, unless I made it clear to the gym staff that I wasn't looking to go to war. Of course, there are only a handful of gyms in this whole stupid, granola-munching, politically-correct state, so. . . .

I would've if I could've. I'd only been fighting for about a year at that time, and I didn't have much strategy in the ring past survival-at-all-costs. If it happened again today, I'd lay him out.

Yeah you don't know what kind of guys you'll be sparring. I once sparred with a big guy and he went easy on me. Then I sparred with a ****y smaller prick with more abilites, and he went all out against me.
All I can say is, don't take this lightly. Be prepared.

I use to go to many different gyms for sparring. For me it was very helpful in the fact that the pace for sparring was always different, it gave me a chance to adapt to diffferent styles, and it also helps you adapt to various fight atmospheres. Personally I recomend it because sparring at the same gym over and over can create some bad habbits. You sparr the same people from your gym and you develope too much respect or friendship and you might not want to really push yourself as much. One thing I will say though, be very sharp and aware when going to other gyms cause when you are the visitor there is no such thing as going light or going easy.

My coaches use to always say, go as hard as the opponent if not harder.

yes regularly we visit other gyms and the fighters from other local amatuer gyms come visit us.

its cool. The sparring is heavier and a little more competative (you won't and they won't want to lose face). But it'll be friendly, and they will be welcoming to you. Just imagine if some lads come to visit your gym and they said "Hey, hows it going" you wouldn't shun them and be a dick... and neither will they. If anything they'll be interested, ask how many fights you got, whats your weight... who've you've fought in the area.

Plus...next time your at an Am show - you will see them, and i'm pretty sure they'll give you a wave/nod or even come up and chat and see how you are.

Like the others said - benefits are different sparring partners - you can get used to fighting the same sparring partners. So a change is good - keeps your wits about you... and i suggest you do...because sometimes it can be tough.

Embrace every chance to spar with as many people. It'll be good practice. Don't chicken out now!

Ha! don't listen to Fraidy, that sounds like a horror story!! lol. j/k FC.
