  • Pavlik-Taylor I three months later

This fight is even better than I remembered. That knockout will always be frightening.

Scoring: The official scores are indefensible. Pavlik landed many more clean shots in rounds one and three, and to a lesser extent he outboxed Taylor in round six. It's arguable that Pavlik be given round four. He outjabbed Taylor from the opening bell, was the physical presence in the ring, and more consistent. His punches were also cleaner, since Taylor simply neglected to use his gloves defensively.
Lederman gave Pavlik four rounds. Merchant gave him three. I give him (on replay, unaffected by commentators and with frequent rewinding to get a better look at punches) three with one split, which makes the fight even going into the seventh.

The second round: excellent punching from Taylor to bring Pavlik out of his game. Pavlik was confused but never hurt. He went down willingly (which shows great instinct) and was up immediately.

Taylor: He was faster in getting off and threw a better variety of punches. This was Taylor's best performance as champ. He did waste too much energy on nervous, hyper movement early. But when he was attacking he did sometimes land clean and often was too quick for Pavlik. He was loading up more than was Pavlik, and I'm skeptical now about Taylor's chance to knock Pavlik out.
His chin is okay, but his instincts when hurt are atrocious. His finishing is also subpar, especially when compared to Pavlik's best-in-boxing finishing.

Prospects for the rematch: it's still hard to call. Taylor could win a close decision if he fights defensively and uses his hands more. But it's a very tough fight for him, maybe too tough.

Oh man it's a classic. Great two-way action. There are more good, hard, clean punches landed in seven rounds than in most other top twelve-round fights this year.

If anything, Pavlik proved in this fight than he is little more than a dynamite right hand. He showed little to no boxing ability, just set him up with a jab and looked for that big right hand. I had the scores at 58-55 in favour of Taylor going into the 7th, and if Taylor had boxed like we all know he can Pavlik would have left that ring another big punching "superstar" who got exposed by the better boxer. As overrated as I think he is, I do really like Pavlik. He seems a nice guy and he is one of the most exciting fighters to watch, but to be hailed as the saviour of boxing because of 2 KO's over decent opposition, only in America.

Rematch: Taylor learns his lesson and boxes smart, and outclasses Pavlik in the rematch and the final in the trilogy, bringing it to 2-1 Taylor.

That's boxing basics, buddy. Use the jab to set up your power punches and keep your hands in front of your face. All other "skills" are less important than that.

Taylor has some advantages, but this fight was about fundamentals over speed. Pavlik's not a great defensive fighter instinctively, but he at least blocks punches by the book, and does everything the way he was t.aught. Taylor has gotten away from fundamentally sound boxing.

You gave Pavlik rounds one and three, I assume. It's nearly impossible not to give him one, and still a robbery to not give him three. But watch round six again. And round four. Watch BOTH fighters as you do. Taylor did not win those rounds.

What about Taylor's bad instincts? You can't train those away. What about his getting outjabbed early? What about his low hands?

It doesn't bode well for Taylor, though I don't count him out

You guys forgetting Taylor isn't with Steward no more? Whether that's a good thing or not, it probably can't be when he's going into a rematch. Steward could have been great at analyzing what went wrong in the first fight and to build a new gameplan. Now with a new guy, things might not go so well. I dunno, I think Pavlik has too much momentum at this point to lose or let Taylor beat him in any way possible.

If you have HBO it's on OnDemand.

So does anyone know where the rematch is taking place? I've heard Vegas and i've heard Cleveland as possibilities. I have a feeling it's going to happen in Vegas as Jim Lampley did say something about Vegas. Can anyone confirm?

Taylor caught Kelly with some pretty good shots, but did you happen to notice the wicked elbow he hit him with just prior to the knockdown?

I think Taylor is making a big mistake fighting this guy again.
After having Pavlik sleep-walking in the second round...if he can't whip him after that round, then Taylor just cannot beat him.
Pavlik wins the re-match much easier this time...
