AMIR KHAN knew he had made an impact on boxing when Floyd Mayweather asked to have his picture taken with him.
England’s lightweight sensation was stunned when the American superstar — rated the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet — came up with his request when they met in the States recently.
Khan, also insists Mayweather is not the brash big-mouth everyone thinks.
He revealed: “People think Mayweather is so arrogant but he isn’t. When we met in America he came straight over to me and gave me a hug and said ‘Hello champ!’
“He then asked if he could have a photo with me and we had a really good chat.”
One of Mayweather’s ‘party tricks’ is to throw $100 bills into the air to see how high nightclubbers can jump.
Khan added: “Floyd has money to burn and people don’t like the way he talks. But, after speaking to him, I think he’s had a bad press.
“All that brash stuff is camera talk to help promote a fight. Floyd talks a great fight and fans want to see if he can fight a great fight.
“It’s like Naseem Hamed and others, they seem to be able to change their personality for the cameras and that’s what helps sell tickets.”
But Khan, 20, reckons he does not have the ability to change when the cameras are rolling — only when he steps between the ropes.
He added: “I don’t think I could ever do it. I’m just the boy from Bolton.
“I am different when I step in the ring — I have that extra thing inside me that makes me a fighter. Outside the ropes, though, I’m just a normal guy. I don’t think I’ll ever be ****y.”
Khan has earned a fortune since turning pro two years ago but has proved he is willing to put more than his fair share back into the sport.
He is funding the refurbishment of a derelict building in home town Bolton to change it into a state-of-the-art gym to help local kids stay on the straight and narrow.
Khan has already pumped in £700,000 of his own money and the final bill is expected to top £1million. But Khan said: “You can’t take your money with you so you might as well try to do something positive with it.
“The gym is in a deprived area and the kids need somewhere to keep them out of trouble and give them some guidance.
“I aim to take them in, give them a bit of discipline, teach them a bit of boxing if they want. There will be a computer room so they can do homework or surf the net.
“One day I want another Amir Khan to come from Bolton, I want to be able to say he came from the gym I helped set up.
“You never know, I could retire from this sport skint . . . but at least I’d be happy knowing I have the gym.”
