Default Thiago Alves vs Ryo Chonnan at UFC 78

PITBULL VS. PIRANHA?

Recent Octagon standout Thiago “Pitbull” Alves (12-3) has been mentioned to face former PRIDE standout Ryo “The Piranha” Chonan (13-7) at Nov. 17’s UFC 78 in Newark, N.J., The Fight Network has learned.

Welterweight Alves decimated Kuniyoshi Hironaka (11-4) at last Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas, Nev. with strikes, forcing the Japanese fighter to verbally submit halfway through the second round with a broken nose and a host of other battle injuries. American Top Team’s Alves, 23, has gone five out of seven since making his UFC debut in 2005.

A star in Japan’s DEEP promotion, Chonan graduated to PRIDE’s roster in 2004 with mixed results. The 28-year-old’s highlight moment in the now defunct promotion came against current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, when a standing Chonan dramatically scissor-dropped to a heelhook to submit the Brazilian at PRIDE Shockwave 2004 on New Year’s Eve.

A loss to dual PRIDE champion Dan Henderson kindled a friendship with the American, and Chonan trains regularly with Henderson at his Team Quest facility in Murrieta, Calif. Chonan scored his second career victory over Ryuta Sakarai in DEEP “28th Impact” last Feb. by majority decision.

The proposed bout would mark Chonan’s debut in the welterweight division.
