  • Boston and Philadelphia

looking back many great fighters started their careers or were born and raised in these great cities with marciano, sullivan, and langford coming from boston and jack o'brien, joe fraizer, jimmy young, and steve cunningham coming from philadelphia.

are there other citys (in the world not just usa) great as these, famous for creating so many great fighters and if there are what fighters came from there?

and im sure i missed some names, are there any other great fighters that hail from either boston or philly?

Boston can't remotely compare to Philly. Not that any city can really...

As far as Philly greats go, you listed 4, 2 of which I wouldn't consider great but just very good, although Young definitely could have been great.

    Some other people worth mentioning...

Tommy Loughran (Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champ)
Bernard Hopkins (Undisputed Middleweight & Ring Light Heavyweight Champ)
Harold Johnson (Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champ)
    Ike Williams (Undisputed Lightweight Champ)
    Jack Blackburn
    Midget Wolgast (Disputed Flyweight Champ)
    Sonny Liston (Undisputed Heavyweight Champ)
    Jeff Chandler (Ring Bantamweight Champ)
    Lew Tendler
    Joey Giardello (Undisputed Middleweight Champ)
Benny Bass (Disputed Featherweight & Undisputed Junior Lightweight Champ)
Matthew Saad Muhammad (Ring Light Heavyweight Champ)
Battling Levinsky (Light Heavyweight Title Claimant)
Meldrick Taylor (Disputed Junior Welterweight & Disputed Welterweight Champ)
    Tim Witherspoon (Disputed Heavyweight Champ)
    Harry Lewis (Undisputed Welterweight Champ)
    Georgie Benton
Bobcat Bob Montgomery (Disputed Lightweight Champ)
    Dave Holly
    Wesley Mouzon
    George Cole

I could keep going but those are the guys I have the highest opinion of...

Wow, some really impressive names coming from philly, i had forgotten about hopkins but the bolded i had no idea.

      Thanks for the list.

Though I assume since your from philly (per your profile) you have a bit more knowledge about its boxing history, any one know of any other greats that might have come from boston that i didnt mention or are those 3 pretty much it?

Pittsburgh has Burley, Greb, Zivic and Conn. The 5 boroughs of New York have WAY to many fighters to name. I'll edit this post in a bit, I think I started a thread about this awile ago and got some good responses.
