LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Alistair Overeem failed a drug test in Nevada, putting plans for a scheduled UFC heavyweight championship matchup in jeopardy, a regulator said Wednesday.
The Dutch kickboxing champion can take a second urine test, but will need Nevada Athletic Commission approval for a license to fight UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos as scheduled May 26, commission executive Keith Kizer said.
Overeem tested unacceptably high for testosterone, Kizer said. His license expired after his last bout on Dec. 30.
Overeem has denied past allegations of steroid use. His representatives did not immediately respond Wednesday to a message left through Overeem's Las Vegas lawyer, David Chesnoff.
Chesnoff represented Overeem in a March 27 plea deal that could erase a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from an allegation that Overeem shoved a woman early Jan. 2 at a Las Vegas Strip casino.
Overeem, 31, made no admission of guilt while agreeing to perform 50 hours of community service, complete an anger management course and stay out of trouble for 90 days, Chesnoff said. Overeem faces 90 days in the Clark County jail if he fails to comply.
The incident that led to his court summons occurred just days after the 6-foot-5, 263-pound Overeem knocked out heavyweight Brock Lesnar in the first round of UFC 141 in Las Vegas.
