There is no proof whatsoever of Liston blinding other opponents, and there is very little proof of him deliberately blinding Ali aside from assumptions based on his mob background. I think I read in Ali's book that the substance was for treating Listons shoulder. In a clinch it went into Ali's eyes.

I watched a documentary in which Dundee said that the cream that got into Ali's eyes was used to treat a cut on Liston's face. The cream was caustic and got into Ali's eyes when he was leaning against Liston.

Hi Sugraj, Liston had a great chin and it would have been very difficult for Williams to knock him out. IN the first round he gave hell to Liston. After 1st round , Liston later recalled that , he sat on his stool and said to himself "to beat me , he would have to do that for 11 more rounds and I dont think he can keep it up". That sounds like the words of a man who knew he had been bested in that round.

Secondly Liston at his prime I believe would have given Ali hell. I dont believe (even when viewing the first round destruction of Floyd Patterson) that the old man who fought Ali was anywhere near close to his prime. Liston never trained for the ALi fight properly, he was in no shape. By the time Ali's eyes got blind he was probably ( I still think it was a fair fight) already gassed. In the sixth Liston when he saw Ali was okay could not throw much resistance as he got a shellacking from Ali.

Liston gets a lot of flak for getting beat to ALi, but thats what has happened in boxing all these years the old being beaten by a hungry young new comer.

Agreed, prime Liston would have given Ali a much better fight. The late 50s was his prime. I rate prime Liston among the ten best heavyweights to have ever lived. The guy was a terrific fighter........

Look every fighter uses whatever tools are there at his disposal...There is no proof of Liston actually doing these and as alreardy stated by others, I don't believe Liston did it.It just happened. It happened in the Rock vs Walcott 1 st fight too, and for a much longer period. Ali regularly held Frazier behind his neck illegally in their second fight, did play a lot of mind games. So he also cheated and he did say some obscene disrespectful things about almost all heavies Jack dempsey, Louis, Frazeir etc etc etc..So should we remember him as an ungentlemanly, uneducated boaster who got slapped by Liston in the casino and got the hell out of there or as a great fighter.I saw your Three great heavy list....Please whichever way you twist the facts in an internet forum...People who actually do read up will always remember Liston as a great heavy..a top 10 material.So give up.You are out of your elements here.No offense meant.

MY point being just stop calling Liston a cheat, based on someones comments. There is absolutely no proof, that this happened and I will take Ali's cornerman's word to that of Bert Sugar anytime.
