  • Comments Thread For: Pirog Takes First Step In Pursuit Of Sergio Martinez

By Jake Donovan - The placement of a comma in a three word sentence is the difference between an exclamation and the realization of the inevitable.

For now, promoter Lou DiBella’s thoughts on his thoroughbred, middleweight king Sergio Martinez facing an undefeated titlist from Russia is an exclamation not fit for print – “F**k Dmitry Pirog.”

But as long as that fighter continues to win, the boxing landscape could eventually reach a point where his stance is altered to “F**k, Dmitry Pirog.” [Click Here To Read More]

Martinez beats pirog pretty easily tbh. but should still do the fight, martinez should just go on a run for unifying the divisions of middleweight and light middleweight.

Theres no one really special or great to test martinez in either of those weights,he may aswell just have fu destroying them all and collecting all the belts.

sergio should just fight pirog next for his tune up and then get his ppv later. it's not like pirog can beat martinez.

Unless Pirog can fight a whole lot better than what I just watched. Than there is no doubt that Sergio wins easy.

Go ask Pirog if hes willing to come to America, get paid like a tune-up, and lose his title....see what he says.

I agree with everyone that Martinez wins such a fight, and probably with room to spare. Pirog is good, not great, and certainly not as good as he was made to look against Jacobs - who quite frankly wasn't and won't ever be ready for fights at that level.

But when you are the champ (in the sense of one ruler per division), then it's your job to defend against all comers. Honestly, as tough as its been for Martinez, he's really only faced one true middleweight so far - Pavlik.

Williams was ranked, but in his mind is still a welterweight who added weight just to stay busy. Dzinziruk is a junior middle. Manfredo (possible next fight) is simply an opponent.

There's no reason to not fight Pirog and I'm sick of hearing all of these reasons why a fight can't take place. He's not going to get Pacquiao or Mayweather. DiBella doesn't dare mention anyone at SMW, insisting that Martinez is maxed out at 160 (which I believe, FWIW). Sturm will most likely never again come to America and I don't see anyone else at 160 that "deserves" a shot in front of Pirog. Guys like Sylvester, Geale, etc don't bring any more or less to the table and Pirog - even if still largely unknown - is more identifiable than those, in the parts of the world Martinez plans to spend his last days as a prizefighter.
