So when they say Phelps is the winningest Olympic athlete part of it is due to the number of swimming events available. However, let's not act as though what Phelps achieve is minimal. He deserves his legendary status.
Look at Bolt, the Michael Phelps of running. He's won 'only' six gold medals which compared to Phelps' 19 doesn't look impressive.
Sprinters opportunities to win Olympic medals are limited compared to swimmers. Some, like Carl Lewis or Marion Jones can and have tried the long jump competition but even if they won it still wouldn't be enough to beat Phelps.

You can conform a valid argument that Bolt could do the 110m hurdles etc.. and should able to do win as it is very similar but a little different technique.

The events Phelps won the eight gold medals in Beijing:
Race 1 -- 400-meter individual medley
Race 2 -- 4x100 freestyle relay
Race 3 -- 200 free
Race 4 -- 200 butterfly
Race 5 -- 4x200 free relay
Race 6 -- 200 individual medley
Race 7 -- 100 butterfly
Race 8 -- 4x100 medley relay
The 200m which is Phelps preferred distance provides with way more opportunity than track which only has one gold opportunity for the 200m track event. The 200m is Bolt's preferred distance too.

Agree he isn't the greatest Olympian ever, not even of this era if bolt wins three more gold in 3 of the most sought after medals in the olympics. Phelps doesn't even compete inthe 50 free which is comparable to the 100 meter, . He is by far the greatest American swimmer of all time tho.

i remember when the olympics was just shown in one channel...
now you have to go scavenger hunting different channels just to find a sport you want to watch.
i saw some boxing on nbcsportsuniversal i think with the indian guy vs the american bruva who wasnt slick doe.
i saw the lightweight victor ortiz lookin fool beat up on a japanese whose punching technique made shawn porter look like the black ricardo lopez smdh..
it also feels like this olympics isnt as big of a deal as previous olympics like in london and china....
