  • Sergio Martinez-king without a crown

Sergio Gabriel "Maravilla" Martinez is an anomaly in the sport of boxing indeed. A p4p top 3 boxer, he stands without a title and without a big contract. Thus he must live off second rate names like Darren Barker, instead of facing guys like Chavez jr, Sturm, Pirog, Geale or Golovkin. Yes, the possibility for all those fights is there somewhere in future, but the big difference is-all these guys hold a title and he doesn't. Yet he is obviously better boxer than all of them. He is with DiBella, so he can't get to fight GBP or Bob Arum-promoted fighters since these are both at odds with DiBella. The best alternative is thus to fight European-promoted fighters or the ones that are with Gary Shaw. He has already beaten one of Shaw's best guys, Dzinziruk. But since Martinez lacks a big tv channel to back him, he had to fight Dzinziruk in the obscure Mashantucket and his 2 biggest fights prior to this, vs Pavlik and Williams, were both in Atlantic City, hardly a Mecca of boxing anymore. He has yet to see the glamourous lights of Las Vegas and its arenas like MGM Grand, Mandelay Bay and Thomas & Mack Center. He has yet to land a PPV fight. And he's 36.

So much left to accomplish and so little time to do it. Tho he has already accomplished quite a lot by beating Pavlik, Williams and Dzinziruk impressively and also beating Cintron but getting denied the decision, he still has to get his moment in the spotlight.

well the way to get his "crown" is certainly not by calling out mayweather and pacquiao. . . he looks *****. . . beating pavlik and williams was a start, but that doesn't mean he should be automatically given money fights. he's gotta go out and GET that ****. . .

why isn't he trying to fight Pirog or Golovkin? he wants to make the most money by taking the least risk. why isn't he willing to go up to 168? He's gotta put himself in the "underdog/challenger" position. . . he's gotta keep taking the hard road. . . two years on top ain't ****. manny and floyd were beating world class ass for a DECADE before they became "money men".

sergio wants to have his cake and eat it too (please forgive the lame cliche), but that's exactly what he's trying to do. he thinks he is entitled to be the drivers seat after two good wins. . . he's gotta KEEP taking risks if he wants to become the "driver".

          Cry me a ****ing river

"Thus he must live off second rate names like Darren Barker, instead of facing guys like Chavez jr, Sturm, Pirog, Geale or Golovkin"

So he was forced into fighting Barker? Pirog's people have been chasing that fight for a while now and Dibella's response was '**** Pirog'. I'm sure the rest, barring Chavez Jr, would love to see Sergio in the ring. And if having Lou as his promoter is somehow holding him back, he has no one but himself to blame as he was a free agent recently and decided to re-up with him when companies like Top Rank and Golden Boy would've loved to have him on their roster and take him to the next level.

And he could still fight any of the super middles and make big money and challenge for titles, but instead he and his do-nothing promoter waste theirs and everyone else's time calling out small welters who clearly have no interest in fighting him. But no, let's all feel sorry for poor Sergio because he's being forced () to fight no-name blown up Eastern European JMWs.
