He was unable to cut off the ring as GGG can. GGG is a master boxer, just in a different way.

I'm of the school of thinking that thinks that it would be completely stupid and naive to go into a fight and start doing things you have never done before and fighting in a style out of your comfort zone.
Obviously you should be always trying to add more dimensions to your game but you essentially have to play to your strengths and if it's not good enough, then so be it.
Why would Canelo go in and act as a brawler and probably end up being less than half as good as he is. That would be madness.
Yeah there's having a game plan and a method but not at the expense of abandoning what got you to that point.
Remember when Berto went into the Guerrero fight trying to do a shoulder roll and act like Floyd and got bounced off the canvas about 3 times in the first round or two. You can't just go and do things you don't do well, you're making it an easy night for your opponent.

Alvarez isn't that kind of fighter. He can't cut off a ring or establish his size like Golovkin does. He does not train to bulldoze through smaller guys. If he had tried to fight that way against Mayweather, he would have failed miserably because you can't just make that switch as a fighter against one of the most elusive, defensively sound fighters in history.
It's not as simple as saying, "I'm going to chase this fighter down." You have to actually know how.

I'm not sure how long Canelo could sustain the pressure if he fought that way. Canelo has always been a very conservative fighter. His output isn't particularly high at all and he seems to lack stamina.
Fighting like that could have worked for 2 or 3 rounds at the start of the fight but if Mayweather survived it could be bad news for Canelo.
