I grew up all over Texas, but I'm currently in one of the cities I've spent time in and out of my life, Brownsville, TX.
Historically, unnatural deaths are no stranger to this region mostly because of the Mexican - American war which occurred in 1846-1848. There are empty fields in and around the city that are preserved as historical landmarks for battles that took place between American and Mexican forces.
Of course, this is home base to the Gulf Cartel so there are occasional bodies that pop up showing signs of a gruesome end. However, there are some murders that have occurred in this area that are straight up grotesque.

This city is pretty small. I spent my high school years here. John and I are about the same age. He went to a different high school, but we met at a party when I was a sop****re as we had some mutual friends. I don't remember what grade he was, though. I ran into him a couple of times more at beach and other parties. I didn't really give him much thought, only that he seemed a little slow.
Anyway, John killed his three children in 2003. The children were 3 years old, 14 & 12 months. They were babies. He claims that the children began to act as if they were possessed.

Apparently, he had a **** childhood. His mom would pimp him out and was a practitioner of "brujeria"/black magic.

The Cult Murders At Rancho Santa Elena Murders

This didn't necessarily happen in this city, Brownsville, but it happened right across the Rio Grande River in Matamoros, MX. It involved people from this city.
During the late 80's, there was a cult led by Adolfo Constanzo, a Miami born American, which was trying to get involved in the drug trafficking business. At first, their leader, Constanzo, would offer "magical" protection to drug trafficking groups in Mexico. Because these organizations became more successful, he felt his "powers" were becoming stronger so he sought to become partners with these groups. He came to Matamoros and requested partnership with the Calzadas trafficking family. They declined so his cult kidnapped, mutilated and murder 7 family members. Their body parts placed in a cauldron with other things to cast spells of protection.
With his reputation as a "sorcerer" growing, he partnered up with a cartel and engaged in trafficking. He then felt that more human sacrifice was needed in order to attain the strongest protection from other cartels and the law. They kidnapped and dismembered random people and rival cartel members practicing "Palo Mayombe". Palo mayombe is a kind of "Santeria" which originated in the Congo. The differences between Palo Mayombe and Santeria is the religion of Santeria uses the forces of light and the members of Palo Mayombe use ther forces of darkness to achieve their goals and magic spells. He was introduced to this as a child living in Puerto Rico with his mother who also practiced.
The **** hit the fan for them when, during one of their "sacrificial sweeps", they kidnapped an American. On March 13, 1989, Sarah Aldrete, an young American girl from Brownsville who was seduced into the cult and who later became the high priestess (she also went to the same highschool as John Rubio), lured Mark Kilroy outside of a bar where he was kidnapped, taken to their Santa Elena Ranch outside of the city, mutilated and "sacrificed". Killroy was a Texas University student on Spring Break, "Texas Week". The US government began putting pressure on the Mexican authorities to look for Kilroy when they arrested a cult member on different charges.
The cult member confessed to being involved in murders, lead authorities back to the ranch where they found remains inside of a cauldron and the graves of over 20 victims. Constanza went on the run to Mexico City where he was eventually found. He had his cult members shoot him promising them that he would be reincarnated.
**** sounds like straight out of a movie. In fact, a movie WAS made about it, but it's not that good.
