  • Cop Crashes Into Donut Shop

    Wellington, Kan. -

A routine call, Saturday morning, turned into a donut disaster as a Wellington Police officer accidentally plowed into a local donut shop.
Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath says officers were called out to respond to a 911 hang-up call. The resident of the home was located at work, at Daylight Donut Shop, 110 S. Washington, and officers went to speak to the resident there.
Wellington Police Officer Troy Wylie was parking in front of the donut shop Saturday morning at around 4 a.m., when Sumner County Sheriff’s deputies say he did not properly park the patrol car he was driving.
As Wylie was getting out of the vehicle, the 2006 Ford four-door started to roll toward the shop. Deputies say the officer attempted to jump back into the vehicle and hit the brake, but instead pushed the accelerator, and struck a tree and plate glass window in front of the business.
The window was broke and some structural damage was sustained to the building, deputies say.
Heath says an investigation into the incident is still being conducted and any disciplinary action toward the officer is pending.
The chief says an outside agency — the Sumner County Sheriff’s Department — was called to investigate the incident as part of protocol.
