Man y'all blame Haymon for everything, outside of the smaller men HBO hasn't had good fights on regular HBO since the 90s.

Which do you think is the bigger fight?

Thurman vs Porter or Crawford vs Postol

The answer is of course Thurman vs Porter. It was on free tv.
I don't know if it's of course. This is the fight people demanded.

Spot on again, difficult to argue with this.

Boxing, especially in the US with networks having to dole out huge sums of money for pedestrian fights, is in serious trouble.

Of course, HBO is saving it's money for GGG. Their target is to attract viewers and not to please a bunch of dumbos on the internet.

I doubt they are saving money for a guy who can't sell a ppv.

Let's also not forget that HBO slashed their boxing budget and isn't willing to put much money at all towards the sport. Honestly, we shouldn't expect much from HBO anytime soon. They don't have real interest in boxing. Hell, by next year they might reserve their budget just to pay for Alvarez and Golovkin.

I can see these kind of international collaborations becoming more common as HBO continues to struggle with budgetary constraints. And plenty more PPV in the US of course - you guys might wanna start thinking about online subscriptions to BoxNation...

very much a significant distinction. HBO will play second fiddle on brook - golovkin. low fee to broadcast, low prices to promote. and host the event. and they get to keep a prime time spot that saturday night for whatever they choose.

it's just a fact of life that HBO can't, and won't, spend more than about 2.5-3 million in total purse for a fight on their regular airwaves.

remember alexander - bradley? oh, you don't ? that's the idea behind not paying that kind of money for that kind of fight. boruing, expensive fight that ended in a clash of heads. literally got people fired, and shrunk the HBO budget the following year.

i have no problem with paying ppv money to make these fights. boxing wouldnt exist if it weren't profitable for fighters, promotors, and networks. wanna see the best fight the best? if they're already establsiehd "a side" guys who command a million + on HBO you may very well be looking at a PPV. so don't complain

HBO would rather invest their money on Game of Thrones type series. Boxing to them is just like non-profit local news for public service.

with floyd and manny gone, there's a lot of uncertainty about the future of ppv boxing. how's ward really going to sell? how good is canelo alvarez? how long is golovkin going to be at his best? what's he going to look like at 168 lbs?

hbo's in a tough spot. it's tough to invest in these guys without really knowing what they've got. let's be honest; paying andre ward 2 million dollars to fight edwin rodriguez was an investment. they're looking to establish a relationship with what they believe may be the best ameircan fighter of the next 5 years, and to do it they've got to shoot themselves in the foot and set the bar for andre ward agaisnt a relative no hoper at 1.5-2 million.

genuine stars in boxing are selected by the people. you've got to catch lightning in a bottle. mike tyson finished fights in 2 or 3 rounds, spoke articulately with a lisp, and was convicted of rape. perfect storm. manny pacquiao is an unassuming little asian guy with dynamite in his hands. floyd mayweather had about as picture perfect a repertoure of counterpunches as you'll ever see. infuriated people intentionally both in and out of the ring. again, another perfect storm. you don't like him / want to hit him? good luck you are in for dissapointment, and will have to watch next time! oscar was turn your head sand stare good looking . i don 't even have to mention his left hook. these guys were the perfect storm. HBO probbly recognizes that the next perfect storm is going to come along, but there's a lot of uncertainty in picking [and investing] in him before the public has made their decision.

                      another thing that sucks:
pushing off the pacquiao - floyd fight worked for everybody. everybody! everybody but us! that's something that will leave an impression. the public may see that kind of promotion for what it is, but there's a chance that they'll use the model of pushing off big PPV fights and filling time with small ones, and having two genuine stars at or around the same weight. the fight will be there in the end.

hell, pacuqiao got knocked the f#Ck out for several minutes and lost 3 steps, and the fight still SMASHED ppv records.
