    the way i saw the fight, machida prepared a 1-2 backward stepping defense against shoguns 1-2 and occasionally 3 step forward attack which accounted for the leg hits, not even mentioning the factor of leg length and fighting style stance of rua.

    Fights are scored on a round by round basis. Shogun was inflicting more damage in every round except maybe the 3rd. Machida didn't even want to engage because he was afraid of getting countered.
