  • Comments Thread For: Selcuk Aydin-Robert Guerrero: Enjoy the Simple Choice

by Cliff Rold - Make sure the DVRs are ready.

Make sure a DVR is in the house.

This Saturday night, Showtime goes live with a Welterweight main event featuring undefeated Selcuk Aydin and former Featherweight and Jr. Lightweight titlist Robert Guerrero. It’s a good match that could turn into a great fight.

    We’ll see.

The one thing known for certain is this: HBO doesn’t have a subscriber or pay-per-view show going head to head on the same night. Enjoy it while it lasts.

It’s going to get hairy from here.

Counter-programming in boxing between the two biggest boxing banks is nothing new. It happens often enough to remain a subject of interest. It’s been seldom enough to be overlooked between spots.

August will be a fairly dry month for the sport all around. It’s no surprise. August, historically, is not bonzo box office for the sweet science.

September is usually the beginning of a huge fall push. Starting September 8, it’s all-out war. The battle lines between HBO and Showtime, and between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, will force fans to make choices aplenty.

Remember the old camera ads ending with the question, “Is it live…or is it Memorex?”

In September, the question will be, “What do I watch live…and what do I reserve for DVR (or next week’s replay)?” [Click Here To Read More]

"When Anne Hathaway is playing Catwoman, perfection is achieved. She blows Julie Newmar and Michelle Pfeifer into the litter box and sets the new bar."

    Surely you jest?

Nope. Not always a huge Hathaway fan but I thought she absolutely owned that part.

Showtime knows they can't outdo HBO but their budget is likely well-managed and HBO's is obviously not. This means that Showtime can put on good fights at a good price and not expect huge numbers nor be affected by the lack o those huge numbers....HBO, not so much.

So when HBO is paying a guy 1.5 million dollars to fight on BAD and Showtime has a premier event going on the same night that steals away 35% to 55% of their viewership, they are severely hurt.

Grand old days and the two decades before the 80's as well when the American Heavyweights ruled the WORLD !!!!!!

American Heavyweights today are dead as a hammer with out much hope if any in sight.

Greedy promoters put on good fights in the past but now are more greedy than ever. They are making fights from their own yards,,,,,get outa ya yard and be open to the WORLD !!!!!!!!

Today , this year , for me, the biggest fight yet is Chavez Jr vs Martinez.

The Canelo fight is stupid, its one promoter vs another

Boxing is fouling up bad !!

Since GBP appears to have their own network head at their disposal it seems they are going to go head to head with every major HBO card. It's not just Jcc Jr vs Martinez but Dawson vs Ward and Donaire vs TBD? I'll take all the HBO cards including the PPV, it's where the bigger fights are, better production and Donaire vs anyone beats Garcia vs Morales II at this point. 2 out of 3 of the SHO cards are pointless with Devon vs Bailey being the only true competitive match.
