Its more the time line when Foreman fought Frazier who was 10/20 pounds overweight by the second fight at 224/225 pounds, not really a big surprise when you look back on the circumstances. Norton just fought the wrong game plan and forgot to try and out box instead of out punch Foreman.

Ali didn't outsmart Foreman really he had no choice but to stay on the ropes for 7 rounds due to the much stronger Foreman..., Foreman outsmarted himself, and punched like a big oaf barley landing many solid shots that actually connected to Alis head and didn't land any off the ropes, so he never truly hurt Ali but with body shots and a FEW head shots but mostly grazed ones or ones where Ali was using the ropes to bounce backwards off them to lighten the effects...he missed more than 20 in the first round and landed only around 4 in the first round...that's basically how that fight goes.

Agreed. Ali knew Forman was all power, no stamina. Simple strategy was let Big George tire himself out then open up on him 'til the big shot presented itself.

Im sure Ali's upper body was in serious pain for several weeks after that fight.

It was the scarifice he chose to make for the big win.

            Yep.

Ali knew Forman couldnt really swim in shallow waters, much less the deep.

Foreman is beatable but NEVER by someone who's coming straight at him or standing in front of him. You have to employ a hit and run game plan to beat him. Beating him in a pure firefight is impossible.

It boiled down to experience. Foreman had destroyed Joe Frazier and Ken Norton in 4 minutes and 46 seconds. He didn't need to know anything apart from what had worked for him all along, and he was a young man with no sense whatsoever of his own vulnerability.

Ali on the other hand had come back from suspension a fraction of the athlete he had been before his ban. He had been through hell against Frazier and fought 10 rounds with a broken jaw against Norton. He simply knew an awful lot more about surviving a tough fight than Foreman did.

Foreman's crudeness would always have made a crafty fighter like Ali a difficult opponent to beat down. But you put the brain of 90's George into the athlete he was in '74 and he could beat Ali for sure.

Look, if you back to the tape of Foreman v Norton (I believe), you see Ali giving tips on how to beat Foreman ,saying you have to jab and move, tie him up and wear him down, "the guy can't go past 6 without gassing" or something along those lines.

Frazier and Norton, neither man had the endurance, the chin or the intelligence to make that plan work. Ali did. In doing so he beat one of the most feared heavyweights ever.
