The difference here though is that Bonaparte and Hitler invaded Russia and the Russian winters pretty much killed them.

When Russia went into Afghanistan it drained them physically and financially and it didn't really work out very well.

Russia's economy won't be able to handle a long war in Syria...the question is how fast they can accomplish their mission if they can.

    • It seems the overwhelming majority of people on the outside looking in still view russia the old Soviet lens. It's a totally different country and economy now. I know how history worked out. They lost 55,000 in Afghanistan...pretty much their Vietnam.

Afghanistan did not drain the Soviet Union financially at all. It was the Cold War with the United States and the arms race during said Cold War.

Definitely the arms race and cold war were a heavy strain on Russia...but Afghanistan was 10 years of war for Russia and it cost them billions.

              This from the History Channel...

For the Soviet Union, the intervention proved extraordinarily costly in a number of ways. While the Soviets never released official casualty figures for the war in Afghanistan, U.S. intelligence sources estimated that as many as 15,000 Russian troops died in Afghanistan, and the economic cost to the already struggling Soviet economy ran into billions of dollars.

By 1988, the Soviets decided to extricate itself from the situation. Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev saw the Afghan intervention as an increasing drain on the Soviet economy

                • Russia has already started the economic sanctions, and to add insult to injured Turkish butts, they are reportedly going to recognize the Armenian Genocide which is like a punch below the belt for the Turks. Lovely.

                      neither wants war.

but as far as being scared of russia?

                      turks have a strong military.

they held nato south flank during cold war vs. much larger, much stronger soviet union.

unlike most nato, turks bordered USSR and had no ally next door.

the greeks were but they hate turks more than russians.

                      ppl overestimate current russian power.
