  • Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson eats about 821 pounds of cod per year.

Like many people on the Internet, those of us at the FiveThirtyEight office have been passing around a piece from Mallory Ortberg at The Toast that details the author’s shock at Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s daily food plan, which was chronicled in Muscle and Fitness.

It’s a remarkable eating plan. The 42-year old actor consumes pounds of animal protein to maintain his immense bulk — his seven daily meals include a total of 2.3 pounds of cod and 12 eggs, plus steak and chicken — but he also manages to eat two potatoes, some vegetables, rice, and so on.

Johnson eats roughly 10 pounds of food every day. Here’s the nutritional breakdown of his daily diet according to Wolfram Alpha:

That’s a lot of food compared to the average diet of someone Johnson’s age.

The average American man in his forties consumes 2,734 calories daily, according to data from the USDA. Johnson eats roughly 1,000 calories a day in cod alone. Annualized, Johnson eats about 821 pounds of cod per year. According to FishChoice, Pacific cod goes for $1.75 per pound, meaning Johnson spends roughly $1,400 per year on cod. As all our cod consumption slowly progresses past sustainable levels, let’s all consider Dwayne Johnson uniquely responsible.

Johnson’s nutrient intake is particularly mind-boggling.

NUTRIENT THE ROCK AVG. U.S. MALE IN FORTIES
    Calories 5165 2734
    Total carbs (g) 566 317
    Total fat (g) 109 107
    Sat. Fat (g) 33 35
    Protein (g) 460 105
The average 40-something man and Johnson each eat about the same amount of fat every day. But the macronutrient ratio is way different. The average man in his forties eats about 3 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of protein for every gram of fat in his diet. Johnson eats more than 5 grams of carbs and 4 grams of protein for every gram of fat in his diet. Plus, it appears that Johnson spends long portions of his day exercising, which cannot be said for a typical guy in his forties.

So while this diet may appear horrifying — especially if you’re a cod — if it’s what Dwayne Johnson needs so he can keep being The Rock, I’m all for it.

        The man is half Samoan.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Oos eats a **** ton of food.

If he's eating 7 meals a day that's an average of 65 grams of protein per meal...in an 18 hour day (that's if he sleeps 8 hours) that means he's eating roughly every 2 1/4 hours...EVERYDAY OF HIS LIFE?

You can really only metabolize about 30 grams of protein in about 3 1/2 hours and that's if you have a fast metabolism (probably speed up by steroids). You just piss out the rest.

Lou Ferrigno ate 150 grams of protein at 270 pounds bodyweight from natural sources when he competed despite the fact that he was paid to endorse powder supplement...which he admitted he never took. So I think that article is all bullshit and something that guys in the public eye who take steroids often seem to attribute their size to.

I buy it. At 6'2" and 265 lbs, you have to keep the machine going - especially since I assume he has morning and evening workouts that would leave me feeling sore for a week.

He's on steroids, so don't go eating 2lbs of cod a day thinking you'll end up like the rock.
