Carnea is actually quicker than Vitali (Vitali is probably tougher and stronger) Louis greater than Byrd in very department.

was getting beaten
But he didn't get beat. You don't win a 12 rd fight when you are up on the scorecards and quit.

Originally posted by Mr. InvincibleLol, cute but the difference was that Byrd didn't come into the fight hoping to destroy Vitali's shoulder after getting nearly shut out. Ali was in the fight with Liston and Sonny doesn't seem to get grief for quitting on his stool like Vitali does. Of course Vitali is white and from a European country, go figure.

Fact 1. Joe Louis defeated every tall 250 lb + fighter he faced BY devastating Knockout.
Fact 2. Vitali lost and surrendered to the smallest guy he ever faced(Byrd) and failed to floor the second smallest (5'11 Vaughn Bean.)
Max Schmeling was a trailblazer. Max figured out how to stop a man that no one else could throughout the 1930's and 1940's. He was the singular guy in those 59 bouts to defeat the legendary Joe Louis.
Vitali has achieved nothing of the sort. He had at least 2 different blueprints for beating old fat Lennox and still failed.

Actually it's not much of an achievement at all.

As is usually the case, history has been kind to Liston. After the first Clay/Ali fight, it was considered outrageous for the heavyweight champion to quit in his corner. There were more than a few complaints of "fix". Of course after the outrageous ending to the rematch, everyone soon forgot about the Miami fight when it came to scorning Liston.
But they were also different circumstances. Vitali could have coasted to a points win. Sonny took a beating. Vitali had surgery and was out for awhile. Most figured that Liston just didn't have any answers and just did a slightly more graceful exit than Duran did against Leonard in 1980.
