Honestly anybody starts talking about Satan and you just expect them to have a screw loose. If I was, say, on a date and she started to talk about Satan my decision to back away slowly or to turn and run would be based on how likely I think it would be that I could overpower her if she went all knife-psycho on me.

Imagine being that child, convinced from an early age that the Devil was real and would send demons of pure malevolence to harm children. I had a hard enough time with a mother who was unable to confidently tell me that there are no such things as ghosts, let alone with parents who were constantly and persistently telling me horror stories under the pretense that this was a consequence of an all seeing god who purported to love me.

On one level it's so hilarious how ludicrous these people are, listening to them babble away about the "cultic" (sic) nature of plastic toys but on another it's rather chilling the way they attempt to terrify their own kids.

I didnt realise that Dungeons and Dragons caused such a big moral panic in the 80's.
And was stupidly surprised that in America people are still trying to ban it.

D&D continues to be debated, in the US at least. In 2010, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld a ban on D&D by the Waupun Correctional Institution. Captain Muraski, the institution's gang specialist, testified that D&D can "foster an inmate's obsession with escaping from the real life, correctional environment, fostering hostility, violence and escape behaviour".

What I find funny is that Wisconsin has a gang task force. What I find funnier is hardened criminals are playing D&D.

              What's next?

Shot callers from The Mexican Mafia playing Magic: The Gathering?

I remember reading about this. They said that D&D caused gang-like behaviour. Mind you the object of the game is armed home invasion. Think about it, you get your band of criminals (adventurers) and break into the homes (dungeons) of people (goblins and shit), kill them all and steal their things.

One of the moral panics about D&D was suicides of D&D players. One campaigner made plenty of hay with publicising the names of people who played D&D and took their own lives.

Until somebody actually compared the rate of suicide among players against that of society at large and found that the rate of suicide was significantly lower among people who regularly played table-top role playing games. Yep, regularly socialising with your friends makes you less likely to kill yourself. Who knew?
