  • HBO's awful 2011 schedule

Here is, in no particular order, the HBO televised boxing schedule for 2011. These are WCB and BAD fights, not counting PPV's. While HBO is expected bring us the best fights, and have a huge budget to work with, they continue
to shove these showcases at us. So while the casual fans turn to HBO to see a good fight, they more than likely got a non-competitive match, set up for one fighter to look good. A showcase. Not only that, but HBO sold most of these showcases as World title fights. Its the single biggest problem in boxing today, and you have to blame HBO. If you take a look at the list below, you will see that 20 of the 36 televised fights on HBO this year, were showcases, although a few turned out to be accidentally competitive. I personally would rather see an annual schedule with 10-15 fights, as long as the fights are high quality, competitive fights, between two top fighters. Cut the schedule in half and make better fights. Even if it means only one fight a month, but give us quality. This is a joke.

I agree with you in principle but a few are borderline. I wouldnt really consider Berto-Zavek a showcase especially when Zaveck had a belt and Berto was coming off a loss. Couple others also, but Im not going to nit pick you just to do so as your point is definitely a valid one.

Well, at least Greenberg is gone now. So we can be somewhat optimistic of the future.

Lee vs McEwan and Berto vs Zaveck weren't showcases.

i agree with most except with 5 and maybe 6 since i enjoyed many of those fights. and some of the fights have not occurred yet and you are saying horrible fights. i rather wait for the evidence.

It's been a strange year for HBO in general. The mismatch of Maidana-Morales ended up being the best PPV this year(so far, atleast). Berto-Ortiz was seen as a showcase going into the fight. Not many people were giving Ortiz much of a chance. And he ended up winning a possible FOTY.

A lot of those "showcase" fights turned out to be more competitive than people thought.

                  I'd trade Sky for HBO.
