"One recent poll of Russians released by the Levada research group showed only 6% sympathised, while 51% felt antipathy or had nothing good to say about them."
Says a lot for the Russian people, does that.

To be fair, they staged their flash mob protest against Putin in a Russian orthodox church.
That's akin to calling the Iranian president a gay, pig loving, **** in the middle of a Mosque, without taking your shoes off.

The punishment is far too severe, but if you offend the church and head of state in a country like Russia, you have to be willing to face harsh consequences.

The outcry is a joke. Yes, the sentence is ridiculous. Yes, they should be released.
But don't be fooled into thinking anyone actually cares about the rights of these girls.
In Bahrain a protestor faces 3 years in jail (which will be far worse) for tweeting against the Bahraini royal family (which let's be honest, is nothing, and no worse than what these girls did).
Where's the media outrage? If anything, this is more of a story, seeing as it's us in the West that keeps the Bahraini dictatorship propped up. We actually have some influence in this man's case and can obtain his release, unlike Russia where we have no such direct influence.
The story of these girls has got the attention it has because it occurred in Russia. Our governments will condemn the sentence and treatment of these protestors, while selling weapons to dictatorships so they can slaughter protestors in the arab world (which the media stays silent about).
I hate Putin. But I also hate hypocrites and double standards.
