I was having an argument with another writer about 6months ago that philippine media has a horrible habit of claiming anyone with any semblance of filipino heritage thats successful as one of their own but completely disowning them as if they never existed once they lose. Brian viloria being a prime example. Once receiving red carpet treatment but now most filipinos couldnt event tell you when his last fight was becausr lord forbid a filipino losing makes it onto a major news outlet.

What kills me is that theres a whole handful of talented fighters in the philippines that could improve tremendously with the right coaching but flat out refuse offers to stick with their mediocre gyms and trainers in the name of ethnic pride.
??? Refuse an American coach? Coz of ethnic pride? WTF? You have any proof?

Bad comparison. Brian Viloria is American, he was born in the U.S.
Boom Boom Bautista has his share of losses and he still looks Filipino to me.

So just because viloria was born in the u.s. makes him any less filipino than donaire??? Donaire was raised in mainland u.s. Fought and lost to viloria in the US olympic trials in which he went on to medal that philippine media loved to tout when he was a "filipino" world champion and donaire wasnt. And to top it off donaire's wife is a US gold medalist as well.

The difference with Viloria is that he switched TV stations to the now upcoming TV5 Kapatid, so he isn't under the media hype umbrella of the big stations now. But Viloria lived for a number of years in the Philippines with his grandma.

                    No doubt about it.

Donaire may be of Filipino decent, but he's an American product. All of his skills are "MADE IN AMERICA". He's a tremendous boxer/puncher who is light years beyond any of his countrymen in terms of skills.

No Filipino from the actual island is going to come here with those skills. Never happen because the trainers over there don't have the ability to hone a fighter like he's been trained.

Not in boxing anyway. Cane fighting definitely. That's a different thread though.

but yea, I guess he is American! just like George W Bush and Rick Perry.

You guys are so quick to claim others as your own but you guys wont even claim the President as one of your own, but I guess when it comes to dying sports we can use any help we can get?

OBAMA: HE AINT NO AMERICAN, HE A GDAMN MASLIM , WUT KINDA AMERICAN HAS THE NAME HUSSEIN. Wurr his long form Birth Certificate?!

Donaire: He is as American as American Cheese and NFL, this young fella is a pinnacle and is exactly what it means to be American and living the American dream.

Funny, you only claim people when it suits your agenda.

Here's one for you, what is Lennox Lewis?

                      Is he Haitan? Canadian? British?
