    And bear in mind that Mendel's scale may have been more modest than Darwin's (after all how do you compete for scale with a theory which establishes the origin of all species!) but it was almost as important.
    wait, wasnt Darwin's work, or at least On the Origin of the Species, out before Mendels work?

      Darwin published On the Origin of Species in Nov 1859, Mendel was working on his pea plants experiments during 1856 to 1863 and those experiments resulted in Mendel's Laws. He presented his findings, Experiments in Plant Hybridization, in 1865 (though published in '66) so yes, you're correct.
