The Scot was a slick boxer who could have outboxed anyone, including DeJesus whom he could have beaten at his own game, also a boxer. Buchanan went on to have a a decent post-Duran (retired in '82) record although he never he never regain the title.

So I have every reason to think that without having to deal with Duran's swarming Kamakaze attack style, he would've had a reign as long as Duran's, although less impressive for lack of - shall we say - hands of stone.

He would have probably held the title for a couple of more years. He started showing signs of declining by 1975 though. The loss to Ishimatsu wasn't the result of "homecooking" alone, a prime Buchanan should have beaten Ishimatsu comfortably.

DeJesus, Lampkin, Viruet and of course Ishimatsu (he did get the win) would've been candidates to take his title.
