  • champs chose the weight over 100 years ago this is nothing new

Back in the day the turn of the century champions from 1880-1900 often chose catchweights to meet the other greats

A lot of times when a guy won a championship they added or took away some pounds of the weight limit to suit them

When tommy Ryan was middleweight champ he fought closer to 150

Jimmy mclarnin fought most of his best comp at catch weights

Jamotta fought janiro at a catch weight

The purpose is to make it fair to both fighters, it doesn't always work out. Size does matter but this is nothing new

We know. Both fighters agree to a weight and sign a contract. If you can't make the contracted weight don't take the fight.

This shouldn't be debated as much as it is.

So the catchweight for pac v cotto was a good idea then?

Well let me put this into perspective for your simple little mind.

Around the 1900s there was 8 weight classes.

In the present day there is 18 weight classes.

So in the early days there was a much larger gap between weight classes which sometimes made it necessary to have catchweights for fighters from different divisions to have a fight.

One would think that the additional 10 weight classes would mean that there is less of a need for catchweights in present day boxing.

Can you do simple maths or do I need to simplify further?

Most people don't know that 122-126 was bantamweight back then and there was a 100 pound division....thats a huge gap....jimmy Wilde fought many catch weights

It varied...some say 8 but far back as the 20s-40s there was the junior feather and junior welter divisions that makes 10

There were more catchweights in the past so I don't get all the backlash... For some match ups they are necessary and its been around over 125 years

Im just saying the with the additional weight divisions that there should be less of a need for catchweights.

These days catchweights are more used to drain fighters imo.
