Women do want a "nice" guy, but there's a difference between a nice guy and a nice guy who lets people walk all over them. Or a "yes" man. Nothing worse then a guy/girl who constantly agrees with you no matter what you say or never has an opinion of their own.

It's simple IMO. There's an even keel to being nice without over doing it. On the flip side, most women can't stand an incredibly arrogant guy either - there's got to be a balance of nice and self confidence.

But saying a woman should be treated like **** half the time just so they won't walk all over you, is like saying you need to kick your dog atleast once a day even if they're not doing anything wrong at the moment - just so you can let them know that you're still the one in control. It would be your own fault if the dog ends up biting you out of nowhere, sometime in the future.
