WWI and WWII were a little different then the current wars.
It was different in past wars because the manufacturing base within the US were able to really crank it out. This is how money is made during wars -- by providing war-necessary materials to those who are unable to produce their own.
Today, the US is financing, producing and using the materials needed to wage war, hense, the TWO TRILLION+ dollar debt for the Iraq war. Another war, especially long-term using this business model would be disastrous.
Money is made by selling weapons of war, not by using at a break-neck pace.

In WWI and WWII US would stay neutral in wars and produce for the countries at war. Now we start mindless wars which are just trillion dollar money pits.
