Because they have interests in the country.

Just like the US and the UK didn't care about Saddam gassing Iraqis when we had interests over there.

Infact after Saddam gasses thousands, Rumsfeld went over and sold him some more weapons.

i don't think u.s. sold iraq much weapons.

most iraqi military equipment was soviet, french with some chinese and south african.

we mostly supported them with agricultural loans. i seem to remember they imported a lot of grain from the u.s.

"The full extent of these covert transfers is not yet known. Teicher's files on the subject are held securely at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and many other Reagan Era documents that could help shine new light on the subject remain classified."

"Starting in 1982 with Iranian success on the battlefield, the United States made its backing of Iraq more pronounced, normalizing relations with the government, supplying it with economic aid, counter-insurgency training, operational intelligence on the battlefield, and weapons"

"The United States actively supported the Iraqi war effort by supplying the Iraqis with billions of dollars of credits, by providing U.S. military intelligence and advice to the Iraqis, and by closely monitoring third country arms sales to Iraq to make sure that Iraq had the military weaponry required. The United States also provided strategic operational advice to the Iraqis to better use their assets in combat... The CIA, including both CIA Director Casey and Deputy Director Gates, knew of, approved of, and assisted in the sale of non-U.S. origin military weapons, ammunition and vehicles to Iraq. "

no doubt u.s. supported iraq. everyone did.

from russia to the u.s. to other arabs to western europe.

but most our aid was financial and non military.

they were already being armed to the teeth by the russians and french and the rich arabs were bankrolling their arms purchases.
