I did muay thai for a bit but some people call it kickboxing is there a difference?

Yeah muay thai allows knees to the face and the thai clinch. I believe they also allow leg kicks as well.

Kickboxing is exactly that: kicking and boxing and it has various styles originating in different parts of the world. Muay Thai just happens to be one of them and it originated in Thailand. There is Pradal Serey, which is Cambodian, then Sanda/Sanshou that is Chinese and I am sure there are various others. There are of course different variations of techniques depending on the style.

So, to answer your question Muay Thai is just one of the many Kickboxing styles. You can use either term, but if someone does ask you that what type of kickboxing? You should know you do Muay Thai.
