So, Ray promised to fight Duran and beat him at his own game. He didn't win the fight BUT he won the respect of the people who doubted his toughness. We all know he could've boxed Duran's ears off like he did in the rematch. It's similar to Oscar and Shane. Going into the first fight, Oscar was pissed at the judges for robbing him in the Trinidad fight, so he promised to fight toe-to-toe. In the rematch, he won at least 8-9 rounds easy.
