  • On this day in boxing history - Sept. 7th - 1894

Two years to the day after James Corbett beat John L Sullivan for the heavyweight championship of the world with gloves, that the earliest successful motion pictures of a boxing match were filmed. Attempts had been before but the conditions had been unfavourable.

It was a six round exhibition between Corbett and Peter Courtney (his career before and after the even was rather....non-eventful.)

Corbett was asked to carry Courtney until the sixth and then knock him out. That is exactly what he did.

Cool. Now more than a hundred years later, we can watch boxing matches in high definition.
