  • The Last Hurrah-Holmes/Ali

I came across this video on an old vhs tape the other day. It is a documentary on Larry Holmes and Muhammad Ali as they prepare
for their fight in 1980. It has a sparring session between Ali and a very young Tim Witherspoon who only had a couple pro bouts at the time.

You can tell Ali is not the man he was years before but you will also see the respect Holmes and Ali had for each other.

    Any comments appreciated.

Larry was Ali's young sparing partner years and years before that dreadful fight! Ali came in at 217lbs and I knew he would have nothing at all. He didn't!

Post 1975 Ali was never going to beat prime Holmes.

But I do think Ali's performance was very much hampered by the weakening his body went through because of the thyroid pills which shed his weight. I think he'd have given a better show without them even if he came in the wrong side of 230Lbs. Though it is obvious that the early signs of Parkinsons are there.

There were moments where Ali looked quite quick in sparring in that video, but he was an empty shell on fight night who could barely put one fast jab together, let alone a combination!

Thanks for uploading. I have the documentary 'Muhammad and Larry' saved on my Sky box. It features alot (but not all of the footage in that clip). If there is any more of this documentary on You tube......great!

Even Ali who is hopelessly post prime is more entertaining than just about anyone.

He looked so slow and Witherspoon looked like he was holding back. Sad.

Iwatched this fight on Closed Circuit at the New Haven Coll. and at one point there was thousands of people crying and weeping out loud! Is was one of the weirdest situations I was ever in. People were running out of the place before it was ended! I have to admit I walked out just before the ref was told enough, theres was nothing but heart left and that heart that served him so well made him take a terrible beating that night!
I don't think Holmes was the same fighter after that! It affected him negatively. Ray.

That sounds like a major exaggeration considering that (except for the Witherspoon fight) Holmes totally dominated his opposition for the next 4+ years.

Great video, sad to see Ali old. I like the end where he said I like him too.

                bingo
just watch Ali-Berbick, and it's apparent how much the thyroid pills affected his showing against Holmes.

He was at least able to throw some punches in the Berbick fight

He might have beaten Berbick if he hadn't absorbed several hundred headshots from Holmes too, Ali did win three or four rounds of the ten with Berbick. God only knows how much that Holmes fight accelerated his Parkinsons and his decline.

There was no real reason why Ali wouldn't have been much worse than he was when he met Spinks the second time. He'd have lost a decision to Holmes, but would have gone out with a decent showing without feeling the need to come back to fight Berbick.

The thyroid pills seriously put his life at risk in the Holmes fight and subsequently gave him an excuse to come back to face Berbick.

The doctor which prescribed those pills should have been struck off and made an example of.....
