I don't think Juan was past his prime or anything like that. He fought a tough schedule, probably started getting burned out, got knocked out by JMM and continued with a tough schedule, when boxing was not totally on his mind. He was always talking about going to law school and getting out of the sport. He lost his fire.
He is still only 30 and coming off a long rest. He seems to have interest and the fire to fight back. Once in a while a long rest is a very good thing. Some soft touches to build momentum and with any luck he will capture some of that magic back.
Top Rank is giving him a chance to get his legs back before jumping to the big fish, instead of feeding him to one of their guys. He has been away for 3 years and needs some time to find his edge again.
