How to get points?

I've been here a while, but it seems that I have a puny number of points compared to people who have made a similar number of posts to me. How do people with 300 posts have like 2mil points? I want to start giving gifts and betting but I don't even have enough points to enter a serious bet. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.
