  • Anyone else think this should be the case?

When ever i see MMA on the television i get a bit of a thrill, and immediately turn the channel too watch. However what i dont enjoy is the fact that this isint REALLY MMA. Think about it MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts, However where not seeing a true mix what where seeing is mainly kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, with the occasional bit of wrestling or muay thai, not a large mix if u ask me, why aint there a league for people who want to see people using sport forms of traditional kung fu systems or other eastern martials arts, even more obscure styles like russian sambo or krav maga, i realise that alot of these arts arent really used due to their very survival based ideals and it would be hard to adapt to a competition situation but surely theyre are people out there who are skilled enough to know not to eye gouge when using a tiger style kung fu. And if there are those people out there surely there are people out there wise enough to commentate and referee and score the match, even if it meant having specialist judges for a paticular style?

Personaly id find this much more 'Mixed' martial arts than the current procedure. anyone else keen on this idea? agree/disagree? why?

it used to be like that back in the day when MMA was new, but over time those traditional styles got weeded out and replaced with the more effective boxing/muay thai/wrestling/bjj

I agree. Some of the styles arent fully represented or arent used as much anymore.

This. It used to be like this but most of the ineffective styles got weeded out. Kung-Fu follows a move set that is too rigid and doesn't allow adjustment for each new situation, Krav Maga is a purely self-defense Martial Arts that emphasizes shots to the vital regions(groin, throat, eyes, etc.), and there are some fighters that use Sambo as they're primary form of Grappling(Fedor, Arlovski, Vochanchyn, primarily european fighers) and it is very under utilised. Most of these styles just don't apply as well as the basic wrestling, BJJ, Kibboxing combe does.

Well, the reason why we don't see so many styles is because a lot of the styles that everyone use to think was so great really isn't that useful. Most Kung Fu styles, Karate Styles, etc. just aren't practical. Of course, there are the exceptions like Kyokushin Kai, Seido Kaikan, Ashihara, Enshin, etc. with Karate. And with Kung Fu you have San Shou/Sanda which is starting to make it's mark. Right now i think the reason why you see so much Muay Thai and BJJ is because it's just the norm and safest way to go. It's proven its worth and people feel safer working with something that's been proven useful over and over again than something that's still iffy.
