Other than fights involving Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., the middleweight world title showdown between Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KOs), the lineal champion, and alphabet titleholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KOs) is the biggest fight of 2012. As such, HBO is pulling out all the stops to market and promote the Sept. 15 HBO PPV bout from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
That means a "Face Off" and episodes of "24/7."
"Face Off with Max Kellerman: Chavez Jr./Martinez" will debut Aug. 25 (HBO, 12:45 a.m. ET/PT with numerous replays). As usual, Kellerman will moderate a spirited discussion between the two fighters, who will answer his questions and can also address each other face to face. Because Martinez and Chavez both speak primarily Spanish, there was real-time translation done during the session to make it easier for the fighters and Kellerman to understand each other, so it should come across well, albeit with subtitles.
The two-part "24/7 Chavez Jr./Martinez" series debuts on Sept. 1 (HBO, 11:45 p.m. ET/PT). The second episode premiers Sept. 8 (12:30 a.m. ET/PT), a big night for HBO boxing, which will also be airing the Andre Ward-Chad Dawson super middleweight world championship card from Oakland, Calif.
"24/7," narrated by the silky-smooth voice of Liev Schreiber, will follow Chavez and Martinez as they prep for their much-anticipated showdown.
