  • Most number of title fights in a year

Is Dela Hoya's five world title fights in 1997, with legitimate belts (WBC, WBA, IBF, not counting the WBO which still down below the 3 major organizations) at stake the record for most number of title fights or defenses in a year.

those who had four title fights in a year includes:

    Muhammad Ali (1975-76)
    Julio Cesar Chavez (1993-94)
    Mike Tyson (1987)
    Larry Holmes (1980 and 1983)
    James Toney (1991)
    Terry Norris (1991 and 1993)

Among present-day champions, can they do what a then 24-year old Oscar Dela Hoya did back in 1997, fighting for the world championship, defending his belt more often in the ring, not even Mayweather and Pacquiao would entertain getting into the ring 4 times defending their titles in a span of 12 months.

Did you forget about Henry Armstrong in 1939. Check it out!

It was easier to fight more often in boxing's early days. some of the many factors include:
          1. lesser competition
          2. the need to fight more due to the lower pay
          3. less stringent regulation

With more active fighters in 1920s New York, than the entire world today. The talent pool was a lot larger.

On top of that more talented athletes were going for boxing in comparison to, for example, basketball, than are today.

While you ocasionally have the Floyd Mayweathers and Manny Pacquiaos nowadays, you don't have anywhere near as many concurrent elites.

Look at the Welterweights of today in comparison to Robinson's days, the middleweights he went on to face in comparison to the division today. The heavyweights compared to those of the '70s(!) I could go on, boxing has declined in popularity massively, and as it did, there were fewer fighters overall, and thus fewer special fighters. Now divide them up amongst twice as many weight classes.

Also that's just simply not what allowed Ali, Louis and Armstrong to defend their titles (significantly) more. Their resumes are leaps and bounds ahead of any modern fighters.

            2. the need to fight more due to the lower pay
That comes into it a little, but not really, do you really think Ali had to fight more often due to lower pay?

            3. less stringent regulation
I'm interested in what specifically you mean by this.

Yes because Chavez Jr., Alvarez and the Klitschko's have been fighting all those meaningful opponents this whole time.

Isn't it this was the bum of the month club, yes boxers up to the 50s era fought more often and defend their titles numerous times in a year.

Many workers had to fight back in the days to get food on the table, today's fighters are more athletes. They also had some outstanding talents/athlethes back then.

But yeah Joe Louis 7 defenses.

                    Armstrong did it most.

12 times in 1939. Even in 1940 it was more than 7 times.
