After watching Psycho for the first time in many years I have come to the conclusion the title sucks. The tag Psycho is commonly known as the short word for psychopath. Even in the film description Bates is described as a psychopath. The thing is he is not really a psychopath, he is psychotic. Psychopaths are not detached from reality, they don't hear voices or see dead people like Bates does in the movie. Bates actually has most of the classic psychotic symptoms seen in schizophrenia, or similar dissociative disorders.
Psychopathy traits are better seen in the character Anton Chigurh from 'No Country for Old Men'. Anton Chigurh would be diagnosed as a Primary, classic/idiopathic psychopath.
In conclusion - Bates would be diagnosed as having dissociative identity disorder or schizophrenia, so the movie 'Psycho' would have been more accurate if it was titled 'Schizo'.
