  • Why do some boxers fight with their hands down?

I've been watching Prince Naseem and Sergio Martinez a bunch lately and their style is pretty unique because for good amount of the time they have their hands down.

I know they want to showboat a little. But again maybe not because they still keep their hands down when they r in trouble. Like Martinez in round 12 against Chavez Jr. he still decided to keep his hands down.

When Prince Naseem was clearly losing against barrea his style remained the same hands down....

So I'm just wondering is there any good things about fighting with your hands down? I know u can relax more but do you get better angles with ur punches? I don't know.

I know Pretty Boy Floyd fights with his hands down sometimes with that head pull method to seduce his opponents with. But he mostly has his hands up or at least in his philly shell.

To rest their arms, Martinez has the athleticism and knows how to control distance, hence he does it. Thing is, Martinez is 40 right? It's gonna be more disastrous to do now. As for round 12, Martinez was really out of it, hurt, fatigued and being stupid.

It's like holding and shooting a pistol sideways. Doesn't help, probably can't aim worth a damn, but it looks so damn cool.

David Haye and Gamboa are the same, i think its because they feel they are alot faster than there opponents and will beat them to the punch or be able to side step, dodge any incoming shots.

Works well till they get caught.

Even if they can control distance and is super confident. I would still put my hands up for a tighter defense and expect the unexpected at all times. You can call me super cautious but I think it's smart.

              It's a comfort thing, ultimately.

I recall Sergio talking about how he didn't feel comfortable with the traditional stance, so he did what was natural to him. He's naturally skilled fighting the way he does and he's very, very good at it; why fight those natural instincts to fight in a style that you aren't comdortable with?

David Haye has said a similar thing.
